Contaminated

Reading in Leviticus – it is a challenge some days because it can get pretty redundant. God is giving the children of Israel the law and how to handle the every details of life and sacrifices they needed to make.

Chapter 14  God is giving instructions on how to remove mildew from the home.

Vs 33 – God said, I may contaminate some of the homes.

Meaning God caused them to be contaminated so the children of Israel would be forced to clean them up.

Many of those homes had idols, other gods, and who knows what else in them.  I’m sure God had a reason and method to the homes he wanted cleaned.

Is there something that maybe God has contaminated in your life to force you to clean it up?  Is there an area God wants you to clean up – so he brought circumstances that would force you to deal with the issue?

It may require a lot of work – but your life will be better in the long run!

More Tomorrow!

Have a great week with Jesus.

Whatever it Takes

Several weeks back we did a series called “unCHURCHED.”  http://brentkellogg.me/2009/10/22/messed-up/   As a church we want to do whatever it takes to reach unCHURCHED people!  That has caused us to do some heavy praying these days and one of the ideas we have been throwing around, we decided to move forward with.

Last night we made a huge announcement! (ok, it was big for us)  We know it is not going to be the answer to seeing the unCHURCHED flood the church. However, it is something we believe we can do that will change the DNA of our church.  We also believe it is a great first step to becoming that church that will do whatever it takes…

So what is the big announcement? Beginning Saturday January 30th, we are going to begin a Saturday Night service to make church available to people who can’t do church on Sunday Morning.  As we prayed about it – we just felt there were people we were missing that couldn’t come to church on Sunday Morning.

We are really excited about this. We know it is going to be a leap of faith for our staff and many of our volunteers – but we are a church that wants to do “whatever it takes” to reach people for Jesus!

We also made another exciting announcement last night. Two of our high school girls, Hope Shepard and Cassie Reichard will be spending the summer as missionaries in Nicaragua at the Emmanuel’s Children home in Diriamba, Nicaragua.  http://www.emmanuelch.org/

We couldn’t be more proud of these two girls for the passion they have for Jesus.

One other thing to check out… this is from a church in South Carolina.  Their pastor is Perry Noble – (I’m a fan) they did some great stuff for Christmas.  After watching this… I said our church can do this TOO!!

Merry Christmas!

Better?

Coming SUNDAY NIGHT December 20th – we are making a big announcement regarding the future of Cornerstone Church.  You don’t want to miss it! (AWESOME-NESS!!!)

If you see a movie over the holidays – make sure it is “Blind Side.” It is a great movie that will challenge us all to make a difference in the world around us.

We had a great weekend at Cornerstone Church as we continued our “All IN” Series. Part of our journey is to “Invite” others to Christ.

The Question of the day, Are you better with Jesus Christ in your life?

We recommend hotels, restaurants, movies and electronic gadgets because they add value to our lives.  But does Christ add value to your life?   If he does – how often do we recommend Him to people we know without him?

For me, my spiritual Journey with Jesus hasn’t always been easy, but it is the GREATEST Journey of my life. It is the Greatest Journey the world has ever known.

Are you better with Jesus in your life?

Theology of Forrest Gump

Jeri asked last night… “Can tonight be movie night?”  After much debate as to what to watch, I pulled out an old VHS** Tape of Forrest Gump.

For the younger generation a VHS tape is what we used to rent and watch movies on… it preceded the DVD.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vhs

I forgot what a great movie that was.  I laughed all the way through it.

You laugh when Forrest dances with Elvis. You celebrate when he out runs the bullies throwing rocks at him.  Then there’s the whole football sequence, where he is an All American football player!

You get very frustrated with “Jenny” for the way she treats the only man who ever loved her.  Your heart sinks when he’s sitting in the floor with “Little Forrest.” And you cry when Forrest is standing there talking to Jenny’s grave at the end.

But there are some great scenes that brought spiritual thoughts to mind.  One of which, Forrest is in Vietnam and his platoon is under attack.  He takes off running only to realize he was all alone and had outrun his platoon.

He keeps going back into the jungle to find Bubba.  He risks his life to save 4 people from his platoon before he ever finds Bubba.   Do we risk our lives to save others?  Are we going into a jungle to help those who will die?

Then there’s the HUGE element of forgiveness.  Jenny has hurt Forrest over and over. She has rejected him.  Finally, when she has no one else – she turns to him and asks him to marry her.  He simply says, “OK.”

I’m not sure I would be that forgiving… but 1 Corinthians 13 paints a word picture of that kind of love. To over look the pain others have caused us, and forgive.

I love the line where Lieutenant Dan was ranting about the Christians at the V.A. Hospital.  Lt. Dan turns and asks Forrest, “have you found Jesus?”

Forrest’s response, “I didn’t know I was supposed to be looking for him.”  Only moments later for Forrest to say, “I’m going to heaven Lt. Dan!”

In the movie it looks that Forrest Gump’s faith and prayers #1 saved their life and #2 brought great blessing on Bubba Gump Shrimp.

It’s a great Movie –

You never know what you gonna get!

Broken

If you read my blog AND you are going to be at the “Beyond the White Board” session on Sunday night at Cornerstone – this will be a double take for you.  (A Twin Spin – like we used to say in radio… )

Sunday evening we are asking Cornerstone Church to gather for a creative session about how we can be more effective at reaching the “Missing Generation.”  For more on that you can visit our website and listen to last Sunday’s sermon (10/25/09).

God is really challenging me and I think our leadership to dig deep. To press into him and reach for dreams and visions that will advance the kingdom.  But it begins with a brokenness like that of Nehemiah.

Remember when Nehemiah received news about the state of Jerusalem?  He cried, and cried and cried… and it messed with him.   I’m not so sure the state of Jerusalem doesn’t equal that of our missing generations.   Yet, where is our response? Are we broken like Nehemiah.

For more study on this – read Nehemiah Chapter 1 (especially verse 4).

See you Sunday – and Sunday @ 5 p.m. for Beyond the White Board.  (Child Care provided)

Messed up

I have to admit – I’m messed up…     I know, you are thinking – we already knew that Brent.

We are concluding a series this weekend at Cornerstone, called “unCHURCHED.”     Why people won’t come to church. This whole series has messed with me a bit.  Doing the studying, the research and just the conversations, I have really been stretched in my life.

I love church life. I have been in church my whole life. I’m a paid professional Christian. This is the struggle I constantly wrestle with as a pastor of a church in Oklahoma.

#1 – The church is in decline. More than 75% of Churches in North America are in decline.

#2 – More than 75% in my state don’t attend church on Sunday Morning.

How do we balance being a church that is penetrating into those statistics and reaching people who do not attend church – and maintaining a healthy church and atmosphere for the mature believers?

Here’s where I struggle – and where my frustration comes in. When a pastor or a church says – we want to reach the unreached… Christians give a good “amen.” On Sunday Morning – UNTIL – it affects them.  Until that pastors stops preaching the way they like.  Until the pastor stops catering to the needs of the mature believers.  Then – we go find a church that meets our needs and “feeds” us.   (What does that mean anyway… ?)

I’m thankful for Cornerstone Church.  I think by and large our people get it.

     A.     They are very patient with me as a pastor as I try to navigate the waters and figure out how to be effective in an unCHURCHED culture…and still help mature believers grow.

    B. They are faithful to support the work and ministry of our church.     Because they give – we can send our youth pastor to a Jr. High to feed pizza to over 100 kids and challenge them to live for Christ in their life.     Because they give – we can be creative with our Sunday Morning Worship experience to make it welcoming to those who aren’t churched.

We believe different is good… See you Sunday.

Project life – 2

While on the mission field of Nicaragua one of the things that broke my heart was some of the medical conditions we saw.  Fortunately BMDMI (www.BMDMI.org)  has a great program called project life.  For what is relatively cheap money  – you can offer life changing hope to someone in need.

One of the Project Life cases we saw was a 11-year-old boy who had recently developed a tumor behind his eyes.   He had a lot of headaches and could not control his eyes.  It was a heart breaking situation.  The Local Doctors told us for about $2,000 he could have a surgery that would change his life.

If you feel this is something you would like to help with – tax deductible contributions can be made to Cornerstone Church 8801 W. 41st Street, Sand Springs, OK 74063.   memo: Project life.

God has already moved upon the hearts of many to help with these project life patients.  We are excited to Join God at work and see the ARMY of Compassion (aka the church) in action!

have a great Week!

Life Saving Trip

This week I’m sharing stories and details from our trip to Nicaragua.   One of the things that touched my heart is a new medical screening BMDMI has started doing in Nicaragua.  This year they have started screening for cervical cancer in women.  That is one of the biggest killers in third world countries.

In our cervical screenings we saw 293 ladies and she treated 35 for cervical cancer.  When detected early – this is a life saving treatment.

On the trip we also encountered some tough circumstances as well.  We came across a 5 year old girl who has a heart condition.  We don’t know the extent of it, but we have paid for some testing to be done.  We will get the results from those tests in just a few weeks.  This may be a situation we can afford surgery for her – and save the life of a young precious girl.

While on the field we encountered a young girl who was deaf in one year and only had 30% hearing in the other.  She didn’t need more tests - she just needed hearing aids. From our Project Life money – we were able to buy this sweet little girl the gift of music, sound and add value to her life.  It will cost us close to $400.  But money well invested.  Tomorrow I will share a few more stories we encountered through Project Life.

If you would like to contribute to Project Life we certainly can use the help.  100% of the money donated goes directly to the patient being treated.  90% of our patients are kids. 100% of them are 25 years of age or less.  Checks can be made to Cornerstone Church, 8801 W. 41st street. Sand Springs, OK 74063.  Please notate Project Life on the Memo line.  All contributions are tax deductible.

Best Part

There were so many wonderful parts to the mission trip.  The 48 North Americans made a great team.  The chemisty was good. The work ethic was AWESOME!  But for me, what made this trip special – was to see what our 4 days in the village of El Higueral did for the people there.

When we arrived at the village – they weren’t real sure what to make of us.  They had never had a team like us in their village before.  They had done a lot of work to prepare for us.  I’m sure they were wondering would it be worth all their effort.

The first night in our tent service (which is like a nightly church service) I would say only 40 or so Nicaraguans were there.  They kind of sat towards the back.  Didn’t engage much. Just checking us out. I’m sure wondering – is this too good to be true? Are these North Americans here to help us or take from us?

Each night their participation grew.  The third night we showed the movie, the Passion of Christ.  It was very powerful.  The tent was PACKED!!   Our final night there was what did it for me.  The tent was full.  People standing outside the tent.  They were standing, clapping, singing and worship God right alone with us.  They were very excited.  Their spirits had been lifted. They had JOY!  I’m sure our CONGA LINE helped a little!

When we arrived they were a down, depressed, and hopeless people.  I fully believe God used the 48 North Americans to lift their spirits.  Every hour of hard labor that went into this trip. Every dollar that was spent – paid off in that moment as they were worshiping with us.  In that moment there was no language barrier!

Tomorrow – I’ll tell you about the lives we saved!
